SUSTAINABILITY IS NOT JUST A BUZZWORD FOR US

More and more companies in the country are focusing on the packaging of their products. This is particularly important for companies producing sustainable products, as such products also need sustainable packaging.

Today, buyers of organic, healthy, sustainably produced food are likely to bypass products made from non-recycled raw materials, and it is the packaging that attracts the most attention on the shelves.

“Sustainability is not just some empty concept for us. When we make sustainable products, we also pay close attention to the packaging. Absolutely all the raw materials we use are recycled,” says Aurimas Bagdanavičius, manager of the EKKO LT organic oil plant in Zarasai.

“We have a zero-waste production policy that turns absolutely all available raw materials into ready-to-eat products. The technologies we have chosen allow us to maintain all the best nutritional qualities of the raw materials we use and to work with minimal electricity consumption. Interestingly, official figures show that we consume 50% less electricity than other companies involved in similar activities,” he says.

Waste is avoided in many ways. For example, flour is made from the residue from oil production. The same pomace is also used as organic animal feed.

The same savings can be made in the choice of raw materials for packaging.

“We pay a lot of attention to packaging because it is the packaging on the shelf that consumers look at first. For sustainable, environmentally friendly products, every element of the packaging is important. First of all, both the oil bottle itself and its label must be made from fully recyclable material. The bottles we use are made from recycled glass, which can then be easily sorted by throwing it away in dedicated containers. We also do not waste recyclable packaging. For example, we use the cardboard sheets left over from production to pack products on pallets. So we have a zero-waste policy in both production and packaging,” says the head of EKKO LT, a producer of organic oil.
